There are Swedish versions of some famous Christmas songs. These don't do it for me. It's not tradition for me to hear songs about 'Tomte'. I want to hear about Santa. I'm looking to hear about red noses, not 'röda mular'. And for the best Christmas song there is, I want to hear in English: "Happy Christmas you ass, I pray God it's our last."
I'm talking about the song Fairytale of New York. A remarkably poignant duet even though the singers insult one another with words like slut, maggot and faggot.
I heard the song in Swedish and I thought: I wonder how they translate those insults. The answer is they don't. The Swedish version changes the lyrics into a verse with far less anger and hatred. To me, that just isn't good enough for a very Merry Christmas.
