The woman who took the picture above was on her first visit to IKEA. She had just moved to Sweden a few months ago from Eritrea. I was sitting next to her, people watching, thinking about how nearly every male in the entire store was wearing jeans. Including me. I was counting the number of males I saw who weren't in jeans, and I asked the woman to take a picture of me counting pants.
This is what you do sometimes when you have a blog. You ask people to take pictures of you counting pants, in case you end up writing about trouser-counting. It was after she took the photo I learned she had just immigrated to Sweden. I asked her why, and she said in Eritrea there's no democracy.
So I want to change my story. In the picture above I'm thinking about the importance of democracy, not pants.
